Jared and Jess Plus the Pests

Ok. So I don't really know where to start, but I've been waiting to share this chunk of "news" with you because, well, it's sort of surreal and unbelievable.

Got your attention yet?

A couple of weeks ago, 2 to be exact, I got a phonecall from a casual friend whom I don't really know all that well, but our girls have gotten to know each other at school and have had a few playdates.
She and her sister had been visiting about the girls' last get together and the fact that they were two of eight children with one on the way.

For some reason, this gal took interest in that and asked her sis to ask us if we would be interested in meeting with her and the production company she works for in town.

My friend did call us and after I picked up my jaw off the floor, I giggled a bit and asked myself if I was hearing this right. She relayed that her sister worked for a local production company, Video Arts, and that she was looking for interesting families for TLC - The Learning Channel,
to do a special show on. She had just gotten a request from TLC with a deadline of just under two weeks for the "story."

I told her I would talk to Jared about it, which I did a few minutes later, and we just laughed because we know - We are ridiculously boring poeple! We'd like to think that we are just your normal family, but if truth be known, I guess we are trying to adjust to the fact that we do cause a scene almost everywhere we go. The outloud head count that goes on by complete strangers is almost an everyday occurance.

Sigh.... I guess I'm not the only one counting heads.

Anywhoo, Jared and I talked and prayed about it and I must admitt, only had a short time to make a decision because the next morning, one of the producers called and asked if we had had a chance to make a decision as to whether or not we were even interested in this at all.

I told her we would be willing to meet with them and see what their expectations were and what exactly this would entail in the way of a committment. After all, this meant we would get a date night for the first time in over 2 months! HA!

To make a long and detailed story short, they explained that they had recieved a memo from TLC explaining that they were looking for large families that would be interesting for a special on their channel. We answered pretty basic questions about our family and took a tour of their studio and got to hear about all the work they have personally been involved in.

I mean, who would guess Fargo, ND has a production company. I certainly wouldn't! They have been a part of many things too many to list, (things like "House of Babies") but you can visit their website and look around if you like. (

Jared and I were impressed that they only follow stories that they feel are "family friendly." They work for TLC among other cable networks, but are careful in their personal choices as a company for family entertainment.

Soooo, we agreed to do a demo tape, which in short, is a tape pitching our family to TLC as a interesting special on how a larger family ticks. This is in no way is a formal agreement with any payment. We only agreed to do this because we feel like it is obviously a unique opportunity to share the Lord with others.

That being said, we do not see this going any farther than TLC's viewing team. We are boring remember? HA! Unless they can somehow tie us into Hoarders, the way my house looks lately, (Remember I'm preggo and sick? All I do is sit and watch TLC lately!) or my obsessive compulsive disorder, then I don't see this getting past that 90 second view.

And seriously people, 90 seconds is how long our "boring family" has to grab TLC's attention. Highly unlikely in my book!

But we should get a kick out of our lil' demo tape and get a few laughs out of watching our family in action getting ready for school and just hanging out.

The crew was really easy to have around and the kids all warmed up pretty easily, some taking the spotlight quicker than others. Whether they were hammin' it up, or shy as can be, they seemed to have alot of fun around these great guys! We enjoyed meeting you Zach, Marty, and Mitch!

I hope on some level we were able to be a light for Christ, and no matter what He has planned for our family in this regard, we had alot of fun doing this and are looking forward to hearing back from the production team here in Fargo, that yes, we are indeed boring.

Maddie, did on the other hand, come up with a catchy name for our "show." "Jared and Jess Plus the Pests"

Giggle. Giggle.

I love my boring family.

Who would watch this madness?

We'll keep you posted. I'm sure it won't take TLC long! HA!

Let Me Hold you Longer

Long ago you came to me,
a miracle of firsts:
First smiles and teeth and baby steps,
a sunbeam on the burst,
But one day you will move away
and leave to me your past,
And I will be left thinking of
a lifetime of your lasts...

The last time I held a bottle
to your baby lips,
The last time that I lifted you and held you on my hip.

The last time you woke up crying,
needing to be walked,
When last you crawled up with your blanket,
wanting to be rocked.

The last time when you ran to me,
still small enough to hold.
The last time that you said you'd marry
me when you grew old.
Precious, simple moments and
bright flashes from your past-
Would I have held on longer if
I'd known they were your last?

Your last few hours of kindergargten,
those last few days of first grade,
Your last bat in Little League,
last colored picture made.

I never said goodbye to all
your yesterdays long passed.
So what about tomorrow-
will I recognize your lasts?

The last time that you catch a frog
in that old backyard pond.
The last time that you run barefoot
across our fresh-cut lawn.
Silly scattered images
will represent your past.
I keep on taking pictures,
never quite sure of your lasts...

The last ime that I comb your hair
or stop a pillow fight.
The last time that I pray with you and tuck you in at night.
The last time when we cuddle
with a book, just me and you.
The last time you jump in our bed
and sleep between us two.

The last piano lesson,
last vacation to the lake,
Your last few weeks of middle school,
last soccer goal you make.

I look ahead and dream of days
that haven't come to pass.
But as I do, I sometimes miss
today's sweet, precious lasts...

The last time that I help you with
a math or spelling test.

The last time that I shout that yes,
your room is still a mess.
The last time that you need me for
a ride from here to there.
The last time that you spend the night with your old tattered bear.

My life keeps moving faster,
stealing precious days that pass.
I want to hold on longer-
want to recognize your lasts...

The last time that you need my help
with details of a dance,
The last time that you ask me for
advice about romance.

The last time that you talk to me
about your hopes and dreams.
The last time that your wear a jersey
for your high school team.

For come some brgiht fall morning,
you'll be going far away.
College life will beckon
in a brilliant sort of way.
One last hug, one last good-bye,
one quick and huirried kiss.
One last time to understand
just how much you'll be missed.
I'll watch you leave and think how fast
our time together passed.

Let me hold on longer God,
to every precious last.
